A vision for a new masterplanned district in Sydney's lower north shore comprising up to 1,500 new homes has been unveiled, with FK appointed as the lead architect for the redevelopment by the NSW government's development agency, Landcom.
Located at the former construction dive site for the Sydney Metro in Chatswood, the project comprises four slender towers up to 180 metres in height. The first stage of delivery includes 180 build-to-rent (BTR) apartments for essential workers. Up to 1,300 apartments across the precinct are planned as affordable housing.
A press release from FK notes that the firm "has designed the precinct to support the NSW government's housing targets through well-integrated apartments, public realm and community infrastructure."
"FK's design prioritises secure, well-located homes within a walkable, highly connected precinct, enabling workers to live closer to their jobs and essential services," it reads.
The redevelopment includes the adaptive reuse of the heritage-listed Mowbray House as a community asset and an activated streetscape with childcare, health services, supermarkets and retail.
Reflecting on the firm's design approach, FK partner Rob Mirams said, "Our vision is to create a strong, inclusive and vibrant community at the Chatswood Dive Site. FK's masterplan brings together open green landscapes, walkable pedestrian links and the adaptive reuse of heritage spaces to foster a sense of place and belonging."
"With opportunities for public art, essential worker housing, well-integrated communal and retail amenities, this precinct is designed to grow with its community, supporting connection, accessibility and long-term liveability. Build-to-rent tower[s] for essential workers forms a key part of this offering, helping to deliver secure, high-quality housing within a walkable environment," he commented.
Pending approvals, construction is expected to commence in 2026 with the first essential worker residents moving in by 2028.
